On September 5th 1983, TNG was founded with a vision to develop the local community and the people living there, operating on the principles of fairness and equal opportunity for all – an ethos that continues throughout the organisation today.
In 1983, a pint of milk cost 21p, breakfast television launched Roland Rat and Margaret Thatcher won the general election in a landslide victory. The Employment Rate was 67.8% (the lowest level ever recorded since 1959) and three million people were unemployed.
Times have changed, but TNG has consistently evolved with the changing political and economic climate to meet new challenges and opportunities and ensure that the core elements of successfully moving customers from welfare back into work have remained.
After five years of high success levels placing people back to work whilst improving local communities, in 1988 the original organisation became a private venture which witnessed the start of a 20 year relationship with what are now Jobcentre Plus and the Department of Work and Pensions. In 1991, a new approach to working with the unemployed was developed, leading to enhanced specification for locations, resources and staffing and enabled expansion outside London into Bedfordshire and the North West.
The mid-90's saw further expansion into Nottingham, Leicester, Birmingham and Derbyshire as TNG developed vocational programmes and began delivering work based Modern Apprenticeships, while further Jobcentre Plus success enabled expansion in the North West. In 1997, TNG created the Mentoring Co-ordinator model which was launched in the North West and as a result of its success, new contracts across the UK were secured and TNG strengthened its position in the North West and London. Adding to this success, TNG has been operating multi-million pound ESF programmes since 2002.
In April 2006 TNG merged with InBiz under the Avanta holding company, which not only provided broader geographical coverage but complimented TNG’s current ventures by adding self employment and regeneration activities to the portfolio of services on offer. This merger supported further contract wins for TNG; New Deal prime and Programme Centre contracts in Tees Valley and LSC funded activities including Train to Gain and Skills for Jobs in Kent.
During 2007 and 2008, TNG grew further with the award of Pathways to Work contracts in the East Midlands and North West regions and secured four new DWP ESF co-financed contracts.
All of this has been achieved by focusing on doing the right things to meet our customers' needs and staying focused on the original vision - to develop people and organisations.
